What is Stargardt's?

Stargardt's disease (fundus flavimaculatus) is an inherited retinal disease usually caused by the recessive ABCA4 gene. The mutated gene causes cell dysfunction resulting in yellowish deposits in the retina, focused in the macular. This leads to the development of a blind spot in the central vision, which leads to legal blindness, although the peripheral vision usually stays intact. Colour vision can be affected and patients tend to be sensitive to light. The average age of onset is late adolescence.

At present, there is no treatment or cure.
